Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Robert Duvall at Tribeca for Get Low

Tonight was a big toss-up for me, since there were two feature films showing tonight with some pretty bit promised talent on the red carpet, and I had difficulty choosing.

The first, The Killer Inside Me, had Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson and Casey Affleck at the premiere; whereas Get Low, the first feature film for Aaron Schneider (who won an Oscar for the William Faulkner-inspired short “Two Soldiers”), promised Bill Murray, Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek.

I chose Get Low.  You can’t go wrong with Murray, Spacek and Duvall.  And according to Variety, the same can be said of the movie:

Loosely based on a real-life incident that has long been recounted as legend (with a few embellishments here and there), “Get Low” intros Felix as a taciturn eccentric who, for nearly 40 years, has sternly guarded his privacy while living alone in the woods. (Pic was shot on location in Georgia.) Rumors about his violent past abound, and he lends credibility to those accounts by brandishing (and occasionally firing) a shotgun when unwelcome guests ignore the sign on the road to his property: “No damn trespassing. Beware of mule.”

One fateful day, however, Felix hitches that mule to his wagon and rides into town, where he approaches the local reverend (Gerald McRaney) to “get low” — that is, get down to business — regarding plans for a memorial service. Specifically, he wants to preside at his own funeral — to hear what folks in town and from surrounding areas have to say, good or (mostly) bad, about him — before he actually dies.

Not surprisingly, the reverend rejects the request. But Frank Quinn (Bill Murray), the cynical proprietor of a failing funeral parlor, has no qualms whatsoever about accepting Felix as a customer. Aided by his assistant, Buddy Robinson (Lucas Black), an eager young family man who mutes his own misgivings about the enterprise, Frank plots to put the “party” back into “funeral party” by attracting a large crowd of storytellers for Felix’s farewell appearance. To ensure a huge turnout, he proposes selling raffle tickets — and rewarding one lucky attendee with the deed to Felix’s property (effective, of course, after the hermit’s death).

Kirsten Dunst and Brian Geraghty promote their Bastard

Kirsten Dunst has not been seen in awhile.  But last night she showed up in full force and gave a generous amount of time to the press to promote the short film she wrote, produced and directed, Bastard. It’s about a couple in crisis in a desert motel.

Also on the red carpet was the film’s star, Brian Geraghty (who played Specialist Owen Eldridge in The Hurt Locker).

Kirsten will star with Ryan Gosling in the upcoming murder mystery All Good Things.

Getting Mary-Kate Olsen right

Mary-Kate Olsen 2009 by David ShankboneSome of the people I have photographed present unique circumstances.  With some, such as Uma Thurman, they move so quickly down the red carpet that it it is hard to capture them in a flattering way.

With others, I have several good portraits, but none that cry out “I’m perfect!”

I had the latter problem with Mary-Kate Olsen.  I find her fascinating because she has lived a life few other people can ever imagine.  I allow her wide latitude with problems she encounters in life.  It has to be very difficult to always be in the public eye, with every stumble relentlessly reported.  And to never have known different.

I wanted to find the perfect Mary-Kate portrait from Tribeca.  The one to the right is the one I decided was the ideal capture for her Wikipedia article lead.  Below were the runners-up, in order of preference.

Mary-Kate Olsen (born June 13, 1986) is a Daytime Emmy Award-nominated American actress, producer, fashion model and fashion designer. She has had a successful acting career beginning at a very young age, in roles with her twin sister Ashley Olsen.

Farrelly Brothers photos with Chris Cooper, Luis Tiant and Larry David for Lost Son of Havana

The Farrelly brothers, perhaps most respected for their wildly hilarious comedy There’s Something About Mary, also involve themselves in more dramatic fare.  Former Major League Baseball pitcher Luis Tiant returned to Cuba after 46 years of exile, and the Farrellys produced a documentary directed by Jonathan Hock about the experience, called The Lost Son of Havana. ESPN has acquired the TV rights to this 2009 Tribeca Film Festival entry.  The stars came out for its premiere, including Larry David, Chris Cooper, Matt Dillon (photo provided in this earlier post), the Farrellys and Tiant himself.

Julie Chen, Les Moonves, Jonathan Tisch and Lizzie Tisch – businessmen and their wives receive new portraits

One of the few major realms of New York City I never took on as a project was its business sector. I don’t even have a gallery set up for it. Through the years, however, I have collected enough business celebrities it may be time to start one.  (As with all of my photography, these images are licensed Creative Commons):
