Meet Joan Jett; she has something to show you
Except for spotting weights as the work-out buddy of Cristiano Ronaldo (where he’d really open up while he lifted), I can’t think of a better way to spend a lunch hour than accompanying Joan Jett around Union Square as she approached strangers with PETA vegetarian starter kits.
The kits can be found in newsstands all around New York City.
Joan’s story can only be told in pictures, all licensed Creative Commons (with attribution):
Meet Joan. Joan’s a rock guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and actress. Kristen Stewart just played her in a highly-acclaimed movie about her life. No, she’s not 32, she’s 51, if you can believe that shit. Joan looks good. She has been a vegetarian for 20 years.
Joan has vegetarian beginner’s kits. She wants to give one to you.
To me?
Yes you, Hat. Joan asks, “Do you care about animals and your health?” Joan asks if he would like one of her kits. Hat gladly takes one and talks vegetarianism with Joan.
Now everyone is happy. Joan is happy. Hat is happy. But Joan does not yet see those women with strollers over her shoulder.
Excuse me miss, but do you like animals? Is that your blond baby? Is he a vegetarian? Let me tell you about the health benefits of vegetarianism for women.
Look at these beginner’s kits and don’t worry about the girl’s shirt behind you; it doesn’t mean that she eats cats. Did you know that the turkeys you buy at the grocery store can’t have sex?
Thank you Mrs. Joan, we will share these kits with our Mrs.
Hello Head of Hair, do you care about animals and your health?
Yes, yes I do care about animals and health. Let me take a look at one of those beginner kits you have there.
Thank you for caring about animals, Head of Hair, it was nice to meet you. But wait…
…who is caught in Joan’s eye?
Why it’s another person who cares about the tortured lives, environmental degradation and unnatural diets of factory farm animals.
Joan rocks. And so does PETA.

I love the format of this latest blog and the photos!!!!!
Joan Jett looks fucking amazing! 51?? I would not believe it, but there she is in living color. Definitely a well spent lunch break!
I would hope that anyone (regardless of food choices) will feel the spark to educate themselves from reading this blog. Maybe they will not become a grand vegetarian, but a more informed consumer. Someone that will stand against the torture, abuse, and genetic manipulation of animals.
Awhile ago I picked up a copy of Jonathan Safran Foer’s book Eating Animals. I happily finished reading this while on vacation. Many times I stopped reading and would say to anyone around me “did you know this?” There were times I was immersed in the information pertaining to illness (H1N1/Bird Flu/Swine Flu), and absolutely disgusted by the treatment of animals. I often thought of the idea “out of sight, out of mind”. We the consumers do not know the real truths of the factory farming business. The book really left a huge impression upon me. Do I feel guilty? At times I did while reading, but I feel as if I am more informed.
Have I become a 100% vegetarian? Nope, but I can see in the near future a definite change in that direction. It is wonderful that people are out there trying to educate the public. If anything, the most important issue is how animals are being treated at the expanse of our appetites.
sorry if this is all jumbled in thought. I wrote rather quickly!

That was an excellent response, Bobby, and very much mirrors where I am at.

Nice to know you guys are about the same place as me. When I moved to San Francisco last winter I knew it was a good time for a lifestyle change. If you pay much attention to politics, economics, etc., it’s hard to justify a heavy meat-eating diet, which I’d pretty much fallen into out of habit. For me, the book that really drove the point home was “What’s the Matter with Kansas” by Thomas Frank, where he talks about the utter devastation of western Kansas, and also the aquifer that provides the region’s water, which will dry up completely at some unknown time in the future.
So I went vegetarian. Like you guys, I’m not totally strict — but when I do eat meat (maybe once a week), it is a very conscious choice, and very much the exception. I also do my best to make sure those times involve meat that comes from a responsible source.
Anyway, this Joan Jett photo essay rocks, but not quite as hard as her version of Crimson & Clover!
I liked the t-shirt commment, that was hysterical! I can’t believe she’s 51!
She looks amazing, I’d almost visit NY to have seen that.
Never knew you were so tall David.
If only I looked like her NOW, let alone when I hit my 50′s…..
No need to convert me, I’m already a member of PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals.

Heh – that’s a good, fresh one (if it was 1995)
It’s funny because it’s true.
When I become a millionaire that works 2 hours a day and whenever the hell I want to, I’ll also become a vegan. I wonder where her leather comes from? Someone explain the logic of being vegan and anti-fur while owning more leather than any other person on the face of this planet. While I totally believe that consuming meat can destroy health and greatly affect one’s mental faculties, I must say that claiming to love animals and love leather seems quite hypocritical. And yes, she does look healthier than even most teenagers.
Absolutely great photos, David ! Greetings from Vienna, Austria.
