When Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke at Columbia University in September 2007, I was there to cover it for Wikinews. Most interesting were the people who gathered to protest and argue over whether he should be there.
Often at protests, and I have witnessed quite a few, every attention-hungry person with any issue shows up, hoping to garner some media notice. In the midst of all this was a black lady named Hattie Mae Booker from Harlem, who was preaching that Jesus is what will save the world. An older, bald white guy who would only identify himself as “Rumpelstiltskin, last name Stilkskin” engaged her in a passionate argument. Hattie’s friends eventually started to chant “Evil. Evil. Evil.” as the man tried to talk. This group was involved in a screaming match when I happened upon them.
The exchange, found on Wikipedia’s “Anger” article (with photo, right) is my favorite audio file on Wikipedia.
Have a listen. It’s only a couple minutes. It’s incredible.
They were making such a scene, people gathered around laughing and taking photographs. I loved Hattie’s beret.
